Literature Circles-Jan. 13

Vocabulary: Define the following terms.
  1. indomitable
  2. surge
  3. cavernous
  4. anguish
  5. colander
  6. scornful
  7. disarray
How long ago did the Tucks come to this place? What was the area like? Around what year do you suppose that might have been?
Jesse and Miles seem to feel differently about the fact they're never going to die.  What's the difference? Which one feels more like the way you would feel? Explain.

Discussion questions:
Why did Tuck shoot himself? What happened?
In telling the story, Mae reminds the others that "the cat didn't drink. That's important." Why is that important?

  2. The Tucks came to this place about 87 years ago."In those days the wood was not a wood, it was a forest..." This quote explains what the area was like when the Tucks came. I suppose that they came around the early 1900's. The differenc is that Miles act like he wishes it never happened and Jesse is just going with the flow. I would feel like Miles because I wouldn't want to live forever, in other words I want "the wheel of life" to stop spinning at some point.

Tuck shot himself because he wanted to prove that he can't die. When he did it went right through him like a bullet would go through water.

The Tucks came to this place about twenty years ago. The area was not far from the towns around and had a pond at it. “’We been in this house about as long as we dare, going on twenty years. It’s a right nice place. Tuck’s got so’s he’s real attached to it. Then, too, its off by itself, plenty of fish in the pond, not too far from the towns around. When we need things, we go sometimes to one, sometimes the next, so people don’t come to notice us much. And we sell where we can. But I guess we’ll be moving on, one of these days. It’s just about time.’”(53-54) I think that twenty years ago could have been in the eighties or nineties depending on when the book was written.

In the book Jesse seems more playful and carefree about living forever, while Miles is serious and concerned but Miles is still very welcoming towards Winnie. “But it was Miles who took her hand and said, “It’s really fine to have you along, even if it’s only for a day or two.’”(44) Jesse is very content with life and wants to have fun and be a kid with Winnie. “Jesse sang funny old songs in a loud voice and swung like a monkey from the branches of trees, showing off shamelessly for Winnie, calling to her, “Hey, Winnie Foster, watch me!’”(44) I think I would be really happy if I could live forever so I would probably be most like Jesse. I would want to make the most of it and live with no regrets.

  4. The tucks had come there around 80 years ago in the earlier 1900 around 1930-1945.
When they came they had been looking for land to stay at to stat a farm when they discovered a spring on the way all of them were thirsty so they had a drink, in the book it states they left a t on the tree which was still their after all that time.
Jesse was 17 and now is 104 but that book was written in around the 1980s which i can infer a timing from.
The boo also states how the wood has changed in time from a forest transforming into a wood.

  5. In the book the two boys named jesse and miles had their different opinions from living forever.
miles had seemed to think about it more deeply than jesse because when jesse thinks of it he is a young person still in his mind playful free and has a long life still ahead of him even tho he has been living for over 100 years.

  8. The Tucks came to this place about 87 years ago." In those days the woods, it was not woods it was a forest."nI suppose that they came around the early 1930's. The differenc is that Miles is dissapoited and upset that he is never going to die and and Jesse acts like it was fate and it was ment to happen. I would feel more like Jesse if that had happened to me it must have been fate and would enjoy the life I have living forever.

I think about 78 years ago.
    Peaceful because of nature.
    Around 1930.
Jesse acts like ment to happen and Miles acts like it is dissapointing.
I think I would feel the way Jesse did.
Tuck shot himself because he wanted to prove a point that he would not die because he drank the water.
If the cat didnt drink the water the it wouldnt live forever like the others did, it would just die.
